Overview

 Mathematics Content:

  • Examine the use of linear measure representations (the length model) when working with fractions.
  • Understand the meaning of unit fractions and how fractions are built out of unit fractions.
  • Investigate partitioning, iterating, and how they relate to one another and the whole.

Estimated Time: 1 hr 35 min.

Students will work in a partnerships to investigate relationships between mystery strips both in relation to a given whole meter strip and in relation to each other as they form their own fraction kit. During this lesson students will work to represent fractional amounts, compare, and find relationships between the mystery strips.

Part 1: Students will investigate a mystery strip with a partner and draw conclusions/relationships about this strip in relation to a meter strip that is given.

Part 2: Students will use a set of mystery strips to work with a partner and create a fraction kit. They will use their understanding of relating a fractional piece to a whole.
