Overview

Science Content:

Air has properties that can be observed and measured.

Estimated Time: 1-2 class periods

Design and construct a windmill that is able to utilize the wind (air movement) to do work. Because of grade-level, the focus can be solely on the construction of the windmill blades as it relates to energy transfer from the wind (a fan) to the blades creating movement. Students test the designs as well as explore wind movement by investigating the impact of wind speed (varying fan speeds) and wind direction (fan orientation) on the windmill blades. If students have access to a digital anemometer, this can be used to determine a numerical value of the wind speed.
