Overview

Mathematics Concepts:

Counting numbers within 100

Represent a group of objects with a written number

Make comparisons between quantities- greater than, less than, more, fewer

 

Students will work to investigate how many of a given object they can grab and work to count and represent this quantity with a model and written number. Students will also make comparisons between amounts and work to order quantities.

 

Time Needed: This lesson will span over multiple days of teaching

Part 1: The teacher will model how to estimate, count and represent a quantity of styrofoam peanuts that are grabbed with one hand. Students will then have time to work to complete the same investigation themselves.

Part 2: Students will use their representations from the previous day to match their amount on a number path and make comparisons between numbers.
