Science Tasks with Otis & Flask: Motion of Objects

Third, Fourth, Fifth Grade

PS
PS

Overview

Science Content:

Describe an objects position by locating it relative to another object or the background.

Describe an objects motion by tracing and measuring its position over time.

Estimated Time: 1-2 class periods

Science Tasks with Otis and Flask are designed to help 3rd to 5th grade students revisit and build upon critical science concepts. These centers within the program complement your existing curriculum as lead-ins or follow ups to the science topics.

Students will describe the position of a toy car in relation to another nearby object, such as a feature in the background or piece of tape next to the car. They will then describe the motion of the car by measuring change in position as it is pulled in a straight line for measured periods of time. Students will compare and describe the faster and slower motion of the car as related to change in position over various periods of time. Further, students will explain that more force (push or pull) is needed to make the car's position change faster, and less force for a slower change in position.
